Damage Over Time, or "DoT" is a type of attack that deals damage to an opponent over a specific period of time, usually thirty seconds. On most DoT powers, the damage will "tick" every five seconds starting when the power cast is completed. The initial or first tick was added in patch (unknown), before that the actual first damage event began five seconds after casting.

Initial Tick Bonus
The nature of damage over time trades high damage for more damage in the long run. To prevent players from having to bide their time while the DoTs run their course, the Druid poison DoT, "blight" and the Channeler fire DoT, "ignight" the first tick has a damage bonus so that the caster may have the benefits of a DoT, but also fight as if it were a non-DoT damage power if need be.
