Most Rogues are looked upon with contempt or loathing by civilized folk, or simply ignored altogether. There are some among the ranks of the Thieves, however, who command respect through fear, and whose names are voiced with either dread or hatred: Assassins. Not content with stealing gold or plunder, these grim professionals steal lives instead, killing for their wages, trading blood for gold. Some Assassins are ruthless predators who've developed a taste for blood and thrill at the act of killing, while others are grim professionals, bringing a kind of honor even to the direst of professions. However they approach their profession, Assassins must be able to do three things: get close to their targets, kill them quickly, and escape uncaught. The ease with which an Assassin performs the first and third tasks marks the difference between an amateur and an artist.

Ability Tips


Cloak of Shadows is a unique Assassin ability which provides additional defense and a decent, stackable cold resistance buff. The entire spell, however, does not stack with the defense buff which is available through healers or a Greater Concoction Potion. Most builds of Assassin would benefit by not training this spell at all.

Shadow Mantle is a very powerful spell for group battles, as it can prevent a priority target from recovering almost any health. This power can also be useful during solo play when trying to kill a healing class. In order for the spell to work, the level of training in Shadow Mantle must be equal to or greater than that of the heal used.

Ability Tips


Blindness reduces both attack and defense rating, which means that a target afflicted with it will be easier to hit and also less likely to hit you. It would be beneficial to cast this spell on a high-defense enemy, or on a secondary attacking target to prevent them from hitting you for a short time.

Ability Tips


Exactly like blindness, but affects all targets around you. This spell can be the downfall of a high-defense group, or the best weapon when attacking with one. Plague of Blindness is also useful for escaping multiple enemies successfully during solo play.

Use Antidote to remove poison DoTs in order enter stealth again, or to remove resistance buffs from players while attacking them. Poison is not a common damage type, and is thus not often a priority when players are choosing resistances for gear, but they may try to compensate for this with buffs.

Ability Tips


Slayers focus is a must for any type of assassin. Casting this spell will not interrupt stealth and completely blocks a very popular game mechanic seen in many classes. The buff lasts 2 minutes at one train, and for adding 39 additional trains to it, it goes up by a mere minute and twenty seconds. This spell is best left at a single train.

Counter Venom is a flat damage reduction to all incoming poison damage. At a single train, the spell will block eleven percent of a fully trained poison spell. At 40 trains, Counter Venom will block 50%. The largest sources of poison come from Druids and Confessors, both of which normally do grand master their poison spells, but they are only DoTs and can simply be dispelled by Antidote before the damage is a real threat.

Like Counter Venom, Poison Tolerance is a poison defense spell. Instead of a flat damage reduction, this spell buffs your resistance to the poison. Every resistance point blocks one percent of incoming poison damage. This is also not a priority because you can simply remove poison DoTs with Antidote. If you have no other resistance spell available to you, it can not hurt to have level one Poison Tolorence on you for 10% poison damage resistance.

Ability Tips


Silence is only useful on Bards, Rangers, and players with the Commander discipline. It will stop and prevent the casting of further chants for its duration. A skilled bard will be quick to remove this debuff, however. Silence has full effectiveness at one train, and only gains a longer duration if trained further. Because the recast timer is a mere 10 seconds, this is not practical.

This spell's uses are very limited, and it will only become available when the single-target version is trained up to 6. Silence has a very unique particle effect, and an area of effect version is pointless and would draw attention to yourself quite quickly.

This spell is identical to the mage's warding-line Stun, but its success chance is based on Shadowmastery instead, which is a focus skill you will already be traning. Stuns are incredibly potent offensive spells, and a grand-mastered stun will prevent any action of its target for a full 9 seconds. This spell is highly recommended for a rogue and mage assassin alike.

Ability Tips


Summon Darkspawn is identical to other class-based pet abilities, which are almost useless in all situations. The pet is lost when using stealth, does very low damage, and dies easily. Any skilled player knows to ignore a pet and kill its summoner. The spell is not available until very late in the Shadowmastery focus, so is also not useful for leveling up.

Poison Blade adds a 5% chance of procing poison damage on a meele target to a weapon. Further trains increase the amount of damage delt, but there is no way to increase the firing chance. Like all procs, they create burst damage. It is recommended for rogue assassins to train this, since most of their damage comes from meele combat. Mage assassins should avoid training this spell, though.

This is the primary damage spell for mage assassins, and can be useful to rogue assassins for spell interruption, since it has a very short stun component. The spell does cold damage, which is not common and thus not often resisted. The spell casts and recasts very fast, but for lower damage than other mage class powers.

Ability Tips


Steal Breath is a unique and very useful spell. It adds valuable damage to a target while also slowing them down to hinder escape. It would benefit any assassin to train this spell to grandmaster.

Ability Tips


Most players will have an attack speed buff cast on them at all times because it is available through the Greater Concoction Potion. Therefore, this spell will increase the delay between attacks by a total of 65% and can be recast on the target to keep it on constantly. This is a terrific spell and useful to any assassin for this primary function alone, but it also helps bury the Shadow Mantle debuff to recent easy dispelling. Chilling Shadows is recommended for any type of Assassin.

Fade can only be trained to 20, and is thus vulnurable to Scout's and Bounty Hunter's detect hidden. Fade will cancel if the player moves, so it is mostly useless. The only reason to train this power is to have access to Invisibility at 18 trains. If your invisibility is interrupted before its 30 second recast timer, you can use Fade to disappear sooner while you wait for Invisibility to be ready.

Backstab and its related poison spells are opening moves that require stealth to use. Activate the power a moment before you begin attacking. This spell is useful for rogue Assassins which will stay in meele range, but is not recommended for mage Assassins, as creating distance is important to any caster. </font>
