Cities in Shadowbane are bind points and places to find useful buildings and NPCs. Most cities in the world are owned by real players and their guilds, but a few of them were created by the game world and are open to all.

  • Freehold - A city that allows anyone to teleport to it.
  • Safehold - A city that allows anyone to teleport to it and disallows PvP inside its borders.

Types of Player Cities

After a server is well into its life cycle, you may notice several kinds of player cities on the map.

  • Realm Capital - If a guild leader has claimed the entire realm as their own, their crest will be larger. This city has the ability to tax other cities in its realm and receives other benefits. For more details, see Realm and Rulership.
  • Trainer Cities - A city owner may open their city to visitors to come and use their training NPCs. These can be very useful since Safehold trainers are typically not above rank 4.
  • PvP Cities - Some cities are no more than arenas for open PvP.

Creating a City

In order to create a city, you must first have available space. Open the world map (default hotkey: M) and hover over the land masses, you will find several realms indicated by their glowing borders. The tool tip on these realms indicate a city limit number. You can tell if this limit has been reached by counting the number of city crests in that realm.

Charter

If there is an open spot, the next thing you will need is a guild charter. These seeds are available from any runemaster. There are several types of charters available. The type you choose does not matter unless your server uses a Loreplay rule set. Double click on the charter in your inventory to begin the guild creation process.

Once you have established your guild, you will be made the guild master of an unlanded guild, or a guild with no city.

Seed

The next thing you will need is a Tree of Life. The seed to plant a tree of life is also available from any runemaster. Travel out to your chosen city location and double-click the seed to open the asset placement window. Tweak the position of the tree until the icon is green, then click "place".

The land will flatten around you, and in the center, a Tree of Life sapling will appear, and the crests above your head will change to a landed guild.

Congratulations, you now have a city.

Next Steps

From here, your next steps will depend on what kind of city you are creating. Visit a builder NPC to purchase buildings, and a steward NPC to purchase hirelings to put in them. For more help and advice, visit City Building Guide.
