Magicbane (often abbreviated "MB") is a splinter project of Shadowbane Emulator that began in March 2014 by former Shadowbane Emulator developer Papah and his acquaintance Quietus (then known by the pseudonyms Olga and Artyom) with additional help and financial support from their friends Xemise, Bardiel, Holam, and Chet (whom also used pseudonyms or hid their involvement).

Design Philosophy

Magicbane strives to recreate Shadowbane as it existed when the commercially-hosted servers closed in May 2009, at Patch 24.3. Many of the Magicbane community describe any changes to the game's balance and systems as the destruction of the nostalgia that an emulator should invoke.

Project History

"Artyom" explains Magicbane's origins
The creators of Magicbane were once developers of the Shadowbane Emulator project that split away due to a disagreement in design philosophy. Early on, they hid their true identities and pretended to be Chechnyan fans with no connections or even awareness of the other project.

In fear that splinter projects would fracture an already relatively small community, Shadowbane Emulator chose not to release an open-source version of their sourcecode. Despite these fears, Magicbane launched their own open Shadowbane server in February 2014.

When their server was opened to the public, it was discovered that there were undeniable, unique similarities to the same server operated by Shadowbane Emulator. This, and the timely departure of Papah made it clear that source code used by Magicbane was an unauthorized copy Shadowbane Emulator's, taken by Papah without permission. Despite these facts, the creators took credit for all of the development work done by their former colleagues. Magicbane developers furthered this false narrative by creating intentional "bugs" in the source code which were swiftly "fixed" to attempt to hide their theft and to inspire confidence in their ability to quickly and easily resolve community bug reports.

As of 2017, Magicbane officially dropped their Chechnyan disguises and began to use their former usernames, but have yet to apologize or admit any wrongdoing.
MB insider explains Magicbane's actual origins.
