As a character gains levels, it will receive less experience from the mobs it kills. This is known as a soft cap. A mob's difficulty is indicated by the color of its name in the selection bar and is sometimes referred to as its '''con''' (I.e., "a white-con mob" or something that "cons red"). This term is a holdover from MUDs/MUSHs/MUCKs where the standard command to determine difficulty was /con or /consider.

In the example the reduction of 10 points would have been reduced to 1 point if the group's leader had 90 trains in Leadership; granting 99 Experience Points. For v7.0, the same Experience amount would have been calculated to be 118. This is the original 100 Experience Points, no penalty, and increased by 18% (at 90 trains).

Experience point (also known as XP or Exp) is the unit that tracks Shadowbane's level-based progression system. Experience points are required to gain levels and thus additional training points and ability points. The only source of experience points in Shadowbane is the killing of mobs and players, and once gained, they can not be lost.

Monster "Con"

A monster's difficulty is indicated by the color of its name in the selection bar. This is called con (not to be confused with constitution). This term is a holdover from MUDs/MUSHs/MUCKs where the standard command to determine difficulty was /con or /consider.

Below is a table to better illustrate difference of con and experience gain.

Leadership

Players who apply the Commander discipline will receive a new skill called Leadership. For Leadership work, the character employing it must be set as the group's leader and be within experience-gaining range of group members. Starting with patch 7.0, Leadership grants a top-level bonus to the Experience Points granted (18% at 90 trains). Previously, Leadership was a reduction in the size of the penalty applied to Experience Points granted when leveling as a group.

For example (v6.4 and earlier), 100 points of experience may be reduced by 10% when granted to a group. Leadership would have reduced the reduction by some percentage, up to 90%. This would have returned some of the lost Experience back to the group.

PvE Calculations & Bonuses/Penalties

Base XP for a Mob kill is a combination of three factors: the player getting the experience, the level difference between the player getting the experience and the mob, and an XP Modification Rate on the mob. This calculation is performed for each group member in Experience Range at the time of the mob kill. After this amount is calculated, the following bonuses are applied:

  • (Bonus) Hotzone - The mob's location at the time of death (not spawn) is used to determine if this bonus is applied
  • (Penalty) Errant - Experience Points granted to an Errant player are reduced
  • (Bonus) Realm - Realms under the control of Feudal R8s receive a bonus to PvE Experience Points
  • (Bonus) Experience Charms - Zones that have triggered Experience bonuses to PvE, specifically Noob Island

Soft Cap

Shadowbane uses a soft cap to limit player level. As a player approaches level 75, the amount of experience they receive from all sources gradually decreases, until they get just one point per kill at level 75.

PvP Experience

Players will receive experience points from killing enemy players beginning at level 20. In order to receive this experience, the target must not have been killed by the same person in the past 30 minutes, and also can not be in the same nation.

PvP Experience Bonuses

TO BE UPDATED A PC will receive an bonus on top of the normal PvP experience value if they kill another player under the following circumstances:

  • Your victim is a higher level than you
  • You were the first person to kill your victim
  • Your kill was your first one of the day
  • You are having a kill streak
  • Your victim had a kill streak (that you ended)

Experience Penalties

TO BE UPDATED

PvP Event Experience

Being present when a bane or mine comes to an end will yield a player a large bonus to their experience if they are a member of the successful nation.
